Description
SUMMARY This work attempts a theoretical approximation to collective action and social movements, so as to approach the farmers' movements for the defense of their territories and rural development. In a brief review of the concepts of collective action and social movements, the central postulates of the theory of the New Social Movements (NSM) are revised, underscoring its origin, definitions of form and contents about such movements. Criticism is centered on the questioning of the predominance of aspects of cultural order in this theory, and on the differentiation of social movements in Europe and Latin America regarding claims, organic forms and repertoire of collective actions. Concerning farmer' social movements it is pointed out that the fight for land continues to be in their center, transformed in the concept of territory under their occupation and defense, without impairing other claims of cultural order. This takes place fundamentally as a response to a new wave of privatizations in Latin America, which is oriented in particular to natural and strategic resources. In this sense, current farmer's social movements is a response to changes of structural nature, but their specific actions and their possible social effect are inscribed in political dynamics, where, intuitively or explicitly, they express and demand a new development modality for the countryside.
